What is Palliative Care?
Palliative Care focuses on the prevention and relief of suffering. We carefully manage symptoms by paying close attention to the emotional, spiritual, and practical needs of our patients and their loved ones. We help our patients make decisions about the use of life-sustaining treatment, since these decisions can have profound consequences not only for the patient, but also for their family, loved ones, and healthcare providers. These decisions may determine the time and circumstances of the person’s death and may also shape the person’s remaining life experience.

Who Provides Palliative Care?
Palliative care is most often provided by a team of professionals very similar to an interdisciplinary hospice team.
Advance Care Planning
Advance care planning involves learning about the types of decisions that need to be made as a patient nears end of life. By considering those decisions ahead of time, patients are able to communicate their preferences to both their loved ones and their health care providers.
An Advanced Directive allows you to express your values and desires related to end-of-life care. You might think of it as a living document - one that you can adjust as your situation changes. Research shows that often care at the end of life is inconsistent with the patients’ preferences and they may receive medical treatment they do not want. Patients who talk with their families and medical teams about their preferences for end-of-life care have less fear and anxiety. They feel empowered to direct their medical care and believe that their physicians have a better understanding of their wishes.
